The ball
Jan 27, 2018
I had this wild dream where work invited us to a fancy ball, and it felt like there were going to be a ton of stars and lots of Indigenous folks there! 😂
My boy and I were strolling down from the mall, where we saw babies being showcased at some kind of protest. We had our little one with us too! 😂 Out of nowhere, someone picked up our baby—like we were trading babies around! 🤣 At one point, we ended up holding a baby that a dad had left on a ledge, and it almost toppled over. When the dad came back, he looked super worried that he lost his little one! 😂
After leaving the mall, I think Conan was with me for a bit, but then it turned into Eathan again. We pulled out the GPS to find the quickest way home. It felt like we were going down Gitanmaax hill, but it wasn’t quite right—there were houses everywhere with narrow lanes. We took a small path that wound along the hillside.
It took us a while to make it down, and suddenly the street lights went out. There were a lot of folks walking the same route as us. I lost track of Eathan but wasn’t too worried about it. Then I realized we weren’t heading home; we were actually going to the ball!
The ball was happening in this super fancy building, but honestly, I wasn’t impressed and had planned to just stay home! 😂 Everyone was driving and walking in the dark. Some people had flashlights, while others drove without their lights on! 😳 I passed a few people already dressed in their sharp tuxedos and said hi as I finally made it to the hotel entrance. I could see bright lights and an open entryway to a dining room where folks were arriving. I was seriously not going in; Eathan caught up with me, and I took him to the concierge to see if they had a suit for him. They fitted him with a suit that was way too big and told us it was free! They even had some good jokes to share. I was so relieved I didn’t have to pay. I had no clue what I would wear.
When we got to the room, it seemed like my sister’s place. She was in her usual not-so-nice mood. 😆 She and her husband were waiting for me, but I had no rush to get ready. There were some complimentary dresses hanging up for use, and I thought about wearing a sleek black dress. My sister Terry, who was also there, suggested I should wear something that expressed me more. 🤷🏽♀️ She thought I should go for something colorful.
I spotted some dresses hanging on the far wall that looked trendy and new. It felt like there was a 50’s theme going on for me. I picked this sailor-style dress that was red and navy blue, with sheer fabric and sequins. The top was stunning with a delicate red bow, and the skirt was a high pencil style that started at my ribs and went below my knees, also featuring a sheer overlay. I tried on some hats and accessories but ended up going with nothing for my hair and just grabbed a fur wrap. I can’t even remember what shoes I wore! 😂
As we started making our way down, Cher’s husband kept complaining about something 😂, and we accidentally wandered into an open house for a condo viewing. It was massive and kind of strange, with stone grooved floors that I ended up slipping on a few times.
And that’s where my dream ended—I never did make it to the ball! 😂 I heard that some strong, beautiful Native matriarchs were supposed to speak there, including some who have already passed on.
