Respect Life
We are part of the animal world. Growing up, I didn't know much about the raven, but I heard many stories about it. Those stories never carried the main lesson for me.
As Gitxsan people, we don't fancy up our spirituality. Our lives on the West Coast are tied to the land and the sea—filled with seafood, moose, deer, rabbits, grouse, and the plants that grow here. We’ve learned to respect all spirits. When we take an animal's life, we do it respectfully, honoring its spirit and returning its remains with gratitude.
Every day is sacred. Our ancestors guide us, and the divine is both within us and around us—every thought we have is a prayer.
In the end, it's not about our outward appearances. What truly matters is how we, as spirits, carry ourselves with respect and honor. We have our mystical and magical stories that shape our gatherings and experiences, reminding us of our connection to all living things.
In Gitxsan spiritual beliefs, ancestors hold a central and revered role. They are seen as guides and protectors, providing wisdom, strength, and support to the living. Here are some key aspects of the role ancestors play:
1. Connection to the Past: Ancestors are viewed as a bridge to the past, preserving traditions, teachings, and cultural practices. Their stories and experiences shape the identity of the Gitxsan people.
2. Guidance and Wisdom: Ancestors are often called upon for guidance in decision-making and during important life events. Their wisdom is considered crucial in navigating challenges and maintaining harmony within the community.
3. Spiritual Presence: The spirits of ancestors are believed to watch over their descendants, influencing their lives and providing protection. This connection fosters a sense of safety and belonging.
4. Ceremonial Importance: Ancestors are honored in various rituals and ceremonies. These gatherings often involve storytelling, dancing, and feasting, allowing the living to celebrate their heritage and invite the presence of their ancestors.
5. Living Legacy: Ancestral teachings are passed down through generations, instilling values such as respect for nature, community, and the interconnectedness of all life. This legacy shapes the spiritual practices and everyday lives of the Gitxsan people.
6. Moral and Ethical Framework: The teachings of ancestors provide a moral compass, guiding individuals in their actions and relationships with others and the environment.
